    Answer: Studies serve for three purposes. They serve for delight, for ornament and for ability. Books give us joy in our leisure. They enable a person to make his conversation polished and beautiful. They make him capable of managing the practical affairs of daily life.

    Q 2. What are the chief uses of studies ?

    Answer: Studies mould our character in a healthy manner. History makes us wise, as we learn lessons from past experiences. Poetry makes a person witty. The study of mathematics makes us subtle. We can understand difficult or deep ideas. Science makes us profound. Philosophy makes us serious and sober. Rhetoric sharpens our ability to argue and discuss.

    Q 3. When do the studies become the humour of a scholar ?
    Answer: No doubt, studies have great importance in our life. But we cannot lead our life completely according to the rules given in the books. This is the reason that studies become the humour of a scholar when he starts judging things on the basis of rules given in the books. A scholar can judge everything according to bookish knowledge.

    Q 4.What do the crafty men, simple men and wise men do with the studies respectively ?
    Answer: The crafty men look down upon books. They think that cunningness will do for them; wisdom of books is of no use. Simple men admire books. They look at them with awe. But the wise men derive advantage out of books. With the help of studies, they prune their natural abilities and thus perfect their nature.

    Answer: Studies offer many advantages. Books give us delight when we study them at leisure. They enable us to make our conversation polished and beautiful. Books also give us the sense to manage the practical affairs of our daily life.

    Answer: Reading develops the mental faculties of a man. Conversation and discussion make him a man with a ready wit. Writing makes a man very exact. He can quote exact facts and figures. He learns how to state everything clearly.

    Answer: Different types of physical activities and exercises cure our physical ailments. Bowling is good for the stone and the kindneys. Shooting is good for the lungs and breast. Gentle walking is useful for the stomach and riding for the head.

    Answer: When a man wants to improve his concentration, he should study mathematics. Mathematics improves our concentration. The study of mathematics makes us subtle. We can understand difficult or deep ideas. It makes us intelligent.

    Answer: When we lack reasoning and want to improve our intellect, we should study law and lawyers’ cases. It will make us apt to beat over matter. If we want to call up one thing to prove and illustrate another thing, we should study lawyers’ cases.

    Q1. How do studies perfect man’s nature ?
    Answer: Studies mould man’s character in a healthy manner. They have great influence on his mind. Studies, in fact, pass into man’s character. Different subjects teach him wisdom, concentration, soboriety, reasoning, etc. History makes him wise as he learns lessons from past experiences.

                 Poetry makes him witry. The study of Mathematics makes him subtle and man can understand difficult or deep ideas. Science makes him profound. Philosophy makes him serious and sober. Rhetoric sharpens his ability to argue and discuss. Books enable man to make his conversation polished and beautiful. They enable man to manage the affairs of his day-to-day life most efficiently. Thus studies prune man’s natural abilities and perfect his nature.

    Q 2. How do different types of men make use of studies ?
    Answer: Different people have different attitudes towards studies. The wicked people don’t consider studies worthwhile. They look down upon books. They are full of cunningness and they think that their cunningness will do for them. According to them, wisdom of books is of no use.

                        Simple-minded people have respect for books. They know the value of books in man’s life. But they just admire books and look at them with awe. But the wise men, says the author, derive advantage out of books. With the help of studies, they make their conversation polished and beautiful.

                        Wisdom and knowledge gained from the books makes them capable of managing the practical affairs of daily life. With the help of studies, they prune their natural abilities and thus perfect their nature.

    Q 3. What does the author say about different types of books ?
    Answer: The author talks about the books of different quality. He says that some books are good in parts only. So they should be tasted, that is they should be read in parts only. Then there are some books of mediocre quality. They don’t deserve a thoughtful study.

                So not much time should be wasted on them. They should be swallowed. In other words, they should be gone through hurriedly. But there are some books which are really good. These books are of a high quality. Such books should be read thoroughly and with full concentration. They should be read seriously and deeply. In short, such books should be assimilated.

    Q 4. What must man have if he writes, confers or reads little ?
    Answer: The author says that there are some sort of qualities which a man should possess, if he writes or confers or reads little. He says that if a man writes little, he must have a great memory. With his good memory, he will be able to retain the things in his mind.

                Then the author says that if a man confers little, he must have a present wit. According to the author, present wit would make him able to tackle the unexpected and unpleasant situations at times occurring in his life. And if a man reads little, says the author, he must have cunningness. It would make him look confident. Then he would seem to know that he does not know in fact.

    Answer: Studies have a great influence on human character. They remove mental deficiencies and improve our character. They enable us to make our conversation polished and beautiful. They make us capable of managing the practical affairs of daily life.
